U16 Lady Cannons Gold Promoted to Athena A

The Lady Cannons Gold 91 will play in the Athena A division in the Fall of 2007 after finishing 2nd in the U16 Athena B division on 45 points from 11 games, 14 points clear from their nearest challenger .

The girls' season has not finished with a January tournament still to come but their record of 15-3-3 is a sign of how the girls have developed over the last couple of years.

After missing out on promotion in the last few seasons, the girls scored 57 goals in 21 games at an average of 2.7 goals a game and conceding an average of just 1 goal a game.  The girls failed to score in just 2 games this season in a 0-0 tie with NASA premier in the Atlanta Cup and Concorde South in a friendly game.  Their attacking threat was lead by Katie Taylor, Jennifer Emery and Whitney Mann, assisted by Mary Beth Edwards, Gayle Bell, Emily Husted, Chelsa Hise, Becky Clay and Alex Croteau in Midfield.  The defense has been superb all season with Lauren Byers, Katie Cantrell, Ann Denney, Ashley Davis and Caroline Carter helping Hillary Masdon in goal keep their opponents at bay.

Highlights of this season included a Husted last minute winners against GSA to win 4-3, a great all round performance in a 5-0 thrashing of Douglas County, a 4-2 demolition of AFU Silver and a 4-0 win against Alpharetta Ambush.  Alpharetta were a promotion rival up until the day the Lady Cannons traveled to Alpharetta on the last day of the season.  The girls were unlucky not to finish as Champions as they lead 2-0 at half-time against the Cobb Lady Chiefs who went ton to win the title 7 points ahead of the Lady Cannons.  An injury to Hillary Masdon in goal that caused her to leave the field saw the Lady Chiefs make a remarkable comeback to win 3-2 against a flat Cannons team, who were mentally shattered after losing their GK.  More disappointment followed the next day saw the uncharacteristic lethargic Cannons lose to Henry County Thunder 2-1.  The girls got their season back on track the next week, beating NASA 3-1 despite losing Masdon again to an injury before half-time.  Mary Beth Edwards made an excellent substitute for the injured Masdon.

The girls also played two A division teams, tying both games against Concorde South in a friendly and Norcross Blue in the Norcross Cup, a game they could have won but for the width of the crossbar.

The girls can be proud of their achievements as they head to Savannah in January for the Girls Rock tournament and into the High School Season shortly after.
